I have a dog, that has horrible breath, it is so bad that we can not be in the same room with her, what can we do beside’s making her eat breath mint’s?
Linda and Stinky
Dear Linda and Stinky
You did not mention how old your dog is, but if Stinky is over 5 years old, the most common cause of bad breath would be tarter build up and rotten teeth and you will need more than just breath mint’s to solve the problem.
Just imagine what your breath would smell like after 5 year, if you did not brush your teeth everyday…yuck. Our suggestion is to take Stinky to the Veterinarian to have a general check up that includes her mouth and gum’s, to see if she need’s a dental cleaning and extractions.
A dental cleaning does require that Stinky have a general anesthesia to get a proper cleaning. We have yet to meet a dog or cat that is willing to sit in a dental chair with it’s mouth open to get a full scaling and polishing done.
Anesthesia can be a very scary thought for a lot of pet owner’s, but this is the only way to get a proper dental cleaning done. To lessen the chances of complication’s from anaesthesia, we highly recommend that you do a pre-screening blood panel before the dental, this blood panel will pick up any internal problem’s that can cause complications in recover and it will also pick up any other under lying disease’s that may also be causing or contributing to the bad breath problem.
If you find out that all Stinky need’s to have fresh breath (and to keep you from running from the room when she enter’s) is a simple dental procedure, then please schedule her a dental as soon as possible.
After her dental is done and her mouth is all healed, you can help her keep that fresh breath longer, by starting a brushing program at least twice a week or everyday if possible. If there is no way that you are able to brush her teeth ( she attempts to chew your finger’s off or clamp’s her mouth shut) there are some product’s available that can be add to her water or sprayed on her teeth and special chew treat’s that will also help with delaying tartar build up.
If you need a more complete list of what product’s are available email us at dearbrew@gmail.com and we will send you list of the one’s we recommend or check out A Happy Tails Shop
