Who is top dog at your house?
Dear Brew
I have two Boxers (Buster and Bella) and recently bred them. I want to keep a male puppy, but am hearing negative thoughts that the father and son will fight. This makes sense, but Buster and his dad (both not neutered) got along great! Buster’s mom however was the dominant one out of the three. Buster is 8 1/2 and has been the only male the past 3 years.
My question’s are;
1. Am I crazy to think the males will get along?
2. If I got Buster neutered would they get along or would I need to get both neutered.
3. What age does the dominance start?
Thanks! Shawna
Dear Shawna
1.) I have seen unneutered male’s get along fine, as long as there is an established pack order in place and no female in heat in the picture, however you could run into a problem with a competition between Buster and your new male puppy, if your new puppy try’s to challenge Buster’s standing as pack leader, this kind of depend’s on their personalities, some dog’s are perfectly happy to be follower’s and not leader’s. Right now Buster is the leader, because of age, size and wisdom , but as your puppy get older and bigger he may have grand designs to be the pack leader .
2.) In answer to the neutering question, if you do think that there is going to be problem and a issue with dominance between Buster and your puppy, I would recommened neutering at least one of them, to take the testerone level’s down a notch or two, which should solve or help the problem.
3.) Sign’s of dominance can be seen as early as 3 to 4 months of age, so keep a close eye out for sign’s of a power struggle between the two and if it appear’s that there may be problem, it is time to call your veterinarian to schedule a attitude adjustment.
