Over the counter arthritis medications.

Published by darla under pet RX Edit This

Dear Brew

I have an  8 year old dog that weights about 65# and has arthritis in his hips and like a lot of folks these day’s money is an issue, is there anything I can safely give to Buck to help with the pain in his hips.

Thank you  …Buck’s couch Buddy

Dear Couch Buddy

There are several safe medication’s that you can give to help Buck, the first suggestion we have is to start giving buck 1200mg of Glucosamine a day, but it may take up to a month to see pain relief results with Glucosamine. For something that will give faster relief, you will want to try an adult size buffered aspirin, make sure it is buffered aspirin and not Tylenol or Ibuprofen, both Tylenol and Ibuprofen are toxic to both dog’s and cat’s. There can be some stomach upset with aspirin so make sure to give with food and you should always check with your veterinarian to make sure it is okay to give, as he know Bucks medical history and aspirin should not be given with other inflammatory medication’s like Rimadyl, Metacam or Prednisone just to name a few, so you should alway’s call and check with Veterinarian before starting any over the counter medications.

If Aspirin does not seem to help Buck, the next step is to talk to your Veterinarian at Buck’s next yearly physical exam  to see if putting Buck on Rimadyl or Metacam might be the next step, both of these medications are prescription only and will cost a lot more then Aspirin , but they do give amazing arthritis pain relief.

The last suggestion we have is to make sure that Buck is not over weight and is getting exersiced every day. Even just being a few pounds over weight can cause a great deal of pain to Arthritic hips and joints and it’s not good for both of you to be permanent couch potatoes.Laughing

TGIF.. joke of the day
Two Dog Owners

Two dog owners were bragging about the intelligence of their
pets.

“The brightest dog I ever had,” said one, “was a Great Dane that
used to play cards. He was a whiz at poker, but finally a friend
complained about him and I had to put an end his card games.”

“You had to stop him from playing cards? a bright dog like that? A dog like
that would be worth a million dollars.”

“Had to”, he replied, “Caught him using marked cards.

Have a great weekend everyone and don’t forget to lavish some attention on those furry friends.
